Nicholas J. Seewald, PhD

Nicholas J. Seewald, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Previously, Dr. Seewald served as a postdoctoral fellow at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Seewald earned a BS in Mathematics with Life Science from the University of Notre Dame (2013), and then continued his academic career at the University of Michigan where he obtained an MS in Biostatistics (2015), an MA in Statistics (2018), and a PhD in Statistics (2021).

Dr. Seewald’s methodological research is primarily related to causal inference using complex repeated measures data, using both experimental and non-experimental approaches, particularly difference-in-differences and the design and analysis of sequential multiple-assignment randomized trials (SMARTs). His work is motivated by problems across a wide array of applications, including oncology, substance use and related policy, chronic disease, and mobile health, and spans the entire investigative process from formulating a research question through study design and data analysis. He is deeply interested in building tools to address important statistical issues in a way that is accessible and understandable to applied researchers.

Emily Baumrin, MD, MSCE

Dr. Emily Baumrin's research program is focused on immunologic dermatology complications after cell therapy and transplantation, including GVHD. The goal of her research program is to improve outcomes of these life-saving interventions by advancing methods in dermatologic disease diagnosis, measurement, and precision medicine. Her recent work has focused on 1) development of valid and reliable outcome measures for chronic GVHD clinical trials, 2) study of patient-centered navigation programs to improve screening guidelines for chronic GVHD, and 3) skin tissue biomarker identification in chronic GVHD. Dr. Baumrin is Director of the GVHD Subspecialty Clinic in the Department of Dermatology.

Cedric Bien-Gund, MD, MSCE

Dr. Bien-Gund is a double board-certified physician in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. He is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Pennsylvania. His research has focused on various points of the HIV care cascade, including expanded HIV/STI testing services for men who have sex with men (MSM), pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake, and strategies to increase ART adherence. In addition, prior research has focused on the role of ART and viral suppression on nicotine metabolism in people living with HIV.

Current research projects focus on investigating linkage to care after HIV self-testing, the prevention care continuum, and implementation of pharmacy-based HIV testing and PrEP. Dr. Bien-Gund has conducted research examining self-testing strategies and secondary distribution. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, he oversaw a clinical trial that investigates the secondary distribution of COVID-19 self-tests to underserved populations in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. As part of his MSCE thesis, he investigated use of self-testing uptake among over 6,000 MSM in the United States.
