John Farrar

The National Institutes of Health have announced awards from the Helping to End Addiction Long-term Initiative (NIH HEAL Initiative), launched in April 2018 to address opioid misuse and addiction and to enhance pain management. Many CCEB scholars, including John Farrar, MD, PhD (pictured), are key players in related Penn Medicine grants, which total more than $22 million. Read more about our work with NIH HEAL.

Rebecca Hubbard

Seeing rapid growth in research on care interventions for people with dementia— and for their caregivers—the National Institute on Aging initiated a study with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to inform decisions about which interventions are ready for broad dissemination and implementation. Rebecca Hubbard, PhD, will continue to contribute to this important work. Read more.

Doug Wiebe

What can we can learn by contrasting counties where gun death rates have dropped much more than expected with ones where death rates are much worse than expected?  A team led by Douglas Wiebe, PhD, will explore the question as part of a large-scale new effort by The National Collaborative on Gun Violence Research. How does available evidence about safety and efficacy inform the use of compounded topical pain creams—such as Diclofenac for arthritis pain and lidocaine for skin pain—to treat patients? John Farrar, MD, PhD, has been selected to serve on a National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine Committee that will assess the data regarding the ingredients in these creams. Bonnie Ky

Bonnie Ky, MD, MSCE, has been appointed Editor in Chief of the American College of Cardiology’s newest journal,  JACC: CardioOncology, which will launch in September. Read more.

Susan Ellenberg

Susan Ellenberg, PhD, has been selected to serve on the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine Committee charged with assessing the clinical utility of treating patients with compounded “bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.” Read more.

Kit Delgado

The National Academy of Medicine has appointed M. Kit Delgado, MD, MS, to its committee on Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guidelines for Prescribing Opioids for Acute Pain. The group will develop a framework to evaluate the existing guidelines and recommend a future research agenda to enable development of guidelines that are evidence based. Read more.

Steve Kimmel

Stephen Kimmel, MD, MSCE, is co-Principal Investigator of the new Transforming the Generation and Adoption of PCOR into Practice (T-GAPP) project, which received a $3 million award from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). Junko Takeshita

The American Academy of Dermatology has selected Junko Takeshita, MD, PhD, MSCE, for a 2018 Young Investigator Award. Dr. Takeshita spoke on camera about disparities in care—such as racial disparities in treatment for severe psoriasis—at the AAD’s annual meeting. View her remarks.
