Test Promises More Rapid, Reliable Sideline Screening for Concussions

FEBRUARY 24, 2011

In continuing coverage, Momsteam.com reports on a study by Penn Medicine researchers which found that a simple, quick test given on athletic sidelines was effective in spotting concussions in athletes. "The results of this study demonstrate that the K-D test is an accurate and reliable method for identifying athletes with head trauma, and is a strong candidate for a rapid sideline screening test for concussion, [with] particular relevance to contact sports including football, soccer, hockey, MMA and boxing," wrote co-author, Laura Balcer, MD, MSCE, professor of Neurology, Opthalmology, and Epidemiology. "Our data indicate that head trauma events can be effectively identified by K-D test time scores, and that analyses of this new measure in future studies can establish its role as a rapid sideline screening test for concussion," she writes.
