CEU/Division Objectives and Strategies
The objectives of the Clinical Epidemiology Unit/Division are to:
- promote clinical epidemiology research, both in the community and in health care settings;
- serve as an epidemiologic methods resource for clinical research throughout the Medical Center;
- educate national and international leaders in clinical epidemiology; and
- teach clinical epidemiology and critical appraisal of the medical literature to medical students, house staff, and faculty at the University of Pennsylvania;
- linking faculty from multiple departments throughout the University who are engaged in clinical epidemiology research;
- recruiting and nurturing clinical epidemiology faculty based in departments throughout the Medical Center;
- providing a clinical epidemiology consulting service to support clinical research throughout the Medical Center;
- maintaining an advanced training program for those desiring a career in clinical epidemiology;
- introducing epidemiologic methods and formal skills in the critical review of the medical literature into the activities of clinical departments by grand rounds, bedside rounds, journal clubs, seminars, and courses for residents and fellows;
- organizing and running a four-year Clinical Epidemiology curriculum for University of Pennsylvania medical students;
- organizing and running a four-year curriculum for University of Pennsylvania medical students in Social, Preventive, and Community Medicine;
- organizing research initiatives to assess the frequency, outcome, prognosis, etiology, treatment, prevention, diagnosis, costs, and policy implications of disease; and
- consulting with the private and public sectors of the health care community on issues of public health importance, within and outside the University.
