Pharmacoepidemiology Training Program
Training Program Overview
Brian Strom, MD, MPH directs this training program, working closely with Sean Hennessy, PharmD, MSCE, PhD, as Co-Director. The program is designed to train clinicians to be rigorous and independent academic investigators able to use the range of approaches available in epidemiology to study the use and effects of pharmaceuticals. The program consists of required courses in clinical epidemiology, research methodology, biostatistics; required courses in pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacokinetics; elective courses in advanced methods for epidemiology and biostatistics and/or pharmacology; a required clinical experience in pharmacoepidemiology; extensive independent readings; attendance at and participation in research seminars at the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics; plus the completion of an independent research project in pharmacoepidemiology. Trainees are expected to matriculate in the Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology degree program or the PhD in Epidemiology degree program.
Background and History
Training in pharmacoepidemiology has been provided by the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CCEB) since 1991. This program, managed by the CCEB, had provided pharmacoepidemiology training with funding from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences since 2006. Support also is provided by private industry. Fellowships are available annually.
Research
The CCEB is the primary entity within Penn engaged in clinical epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology research. Superb resources are available.

Eighty-five scientists focusing on clinical pharmacoepidemiologic research have received fellowships.
