Cardiology and Pulmonary Research Training Program
Training Program Overview
Brian Strom, MD, MPH directs this two- to three-year training program, which is designed for clinicians interested in academic careers as cardiovascular and/or pulmonary clinical investigators. The program consists of required courses in clinical epidemiology, research methodology, and biostatistics; a required course in cardiopulmonary epidemiology; elective courses; extensive independent readings; attendance at and participation in research seminars; plus the completion of an independent research project. Trainees are expected to matriculate in the Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology degree program.
Background and History
Training in cardiology and pulmonary research has been provided by the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CCEB) since 1992. This program, now managed collaboratively by the CCEB, the Cardiovascular Institute, the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, and the Pulmonary, Allergy, and Clinical Care Division, has provided cardiology and pulmonary research training with funding from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute since 1998. Fellowships are available annually.
Research
The CCEB, the Cardiovascular Institute, the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, and the Pulmonary, Allergy, and Clinical Care Division, are the primary entities within Penn engaged in clinical epidemiology, cardiovascular research, and pulmonary research.
