Infectious Diseases Clinical Epidemiology Training Program
Training Program Overview
Brian Strom, MD, MPH directs this two- to three-year training program, which is designed for clinicians interested in academic careers as infectious diseases clinical investigators. The program consists of required courses in clinical epidemiology, research methodology, biostatistics, and infectious diseases epidemiology; elective courses; journal clubs and clinical research conferences focusing on research issues in infectious diseases; extensive independent readings; attendance at and participation in research seminars at the CCEB and the adult and pediatric infectious diseases clinical divisions; plus the completion of an independent research project. Trainees are expected to matriculate in the Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology degree program.
Background and History
Training in infectious diseases clinical epidemiology has been provided by the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CCEB) since 1996. This program, now managed collaboratively by the CCEB, the Infectious Diseases Division within the Department of Medicine, and the Division of Infectious Diseases within the Department of Pediatrics has provided infectious diseases clinical epidemiology training with funding from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 2003. Fellowships are available annually.
Research
The CCEB, the Infectious Diseases Division within the Department of Medicine, and the Division of Infectious Diseases within the Department of Pediatrics are the primary entities within Penn engaged in clinical epidemiology and research in infectious diseases.
