Biostatistics
Biostatistics is the discipline that is concerned with assessing the magnitude, reliability, validity, and precision of associations (e.g., between exposures and disease) and making inferences about target populations using data from samples of those populations. This broad field includes the development of statistical theory and methods, and their application to the biomedical and clinical sciences. Biostatistics plays a crucial role in the research process, from design of the research plan through analysis and publication of study results.
The Biostatistics Unit and Division were formed within the CCEB and DBE in 1997 with the mandate to conduct large-scale, multicenter clinical trials as well as patient-oriented research projects, and to provide collaborative biostatistical support for clinical research throughout the Medical Center and the University. In addition, the biostatistics faculty lead the graduate programs in Biostatistics.
